Another Document for American Democracy !?!
On 14 Feb., 2007, there was a news on yahoo by (AP) about suspicious death of an African–American in 1946.Maceo Snipes, 37 years old, is said by his relatives was shot in the back by four white men a day after he voted in 1946 and two days later died. The cause of his death was announced "gunshot wound by homicide". Today there is no evidence of a criminal investigation and no one was arrested but two groups of civil right tried to solve this unsolved investigation. Snips was shot on July 18, 1946, a day after he voted in the Georgia Democratic Primary. He died on July 20. Fearful relatives buried him at night in an unmarked grave before some family members fled the county, relocating as far north as Ohio. Survivors say they still don't know the location of Snipes' grave. Felix Snipes, dead man's cousin says "It wrecked our family for a long time. The older generation still doesn't want to talk about it." This event followed by a lynching two black couple prompted President Truman to dispatch FBI to investigate but this issue remained unsolved.
One of interesting debates about dead man is that he was a veteran. As one of researchers says, he was killed in the country he fought for that.
Analysis
As one of researchers says, I think that what is important today is to know the truth and the cause of this event, because all of the suspects of this event may be dead. What is interesting is that this events happened at the time of African-Americans' early struggles for their civil rights, in a decade that some important leaders of blacks' movement such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were assassinated as president Kennedy. This event and many likes happened that white society in south showed that was not content about what was happening in favor of African-Americans. Even today there is such struggle when Snipes' relatives claim that they want to make it clear that their cousin was killed innocently.
